Coffee Friendship Offering: Our coffee story began over 20 years ago in the mountain hilltops of Doi Chang Village, Chiang Rai, Thailand, home to the Akha Hill Tribe. There, we met Jarern and the Wuiyue family, and a lasting friendship was formed.

Coffee is grown and harvested between 1,200 – 1,700+ meters above sea level, where the clouds rest below you. This coffee thrives in the cool mountain air and rich soil of Doi Chang Village. The Wuiyue family and their 20 Akha relatives form a close-knit family co-op spanning 277 acres, working together to cultivate, handpick, and process each harvest. Their coffees, mostly washed process are enjoyed as dialed-in espressos across Thailand, Asia, and Europe’s specialty coffee scene.

We’re proud to share this special Thailand Chiang Rai Natural Process coffee from Jarern and the Wuiyue family. Grown, harvested, and processed on their 47 acre personal family farm, only about 200kg of this natural process green coffee is produced each year, usually kept close and shared among friends.

Roasted for filter, it shines 4–6 weeks after roast. Expect a bright, aromatic cup with juicy sweetness, gentle tart notes, and a clean smooth tea-like finish.

LEARN MORE

Jarern is a third-generation Akha Hill Tribe coffee producer from Doi Chang Village in Chiang Rai. Guided by the traditions and wisdom of his elders, he blends generations of knowledge with modern techniques to produce coffees that express the distinct story and spirit of the Doi Chang people.

Like many third-generation producers of the Akha community, Jarern is part of a new generation shaping the future of Doi Chang’s coffee landscape. While honoring their heritage, they’re redefining sustainability and tackling challenges from climate and environment to economics concerns and ensuring the next generation of Akha producers continues to prosper.

Akha Villagers in Thailand:
The Akha are an Indigenous hill tribe living across the mountains of Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, and China’s Yunnan Province. Many Akha families settled in Northern Thailand during the early 20th century, with about 80,000 now living in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai regions known for their cool climate and fertile highlands.

From Opium to Coffee
Not long ago, many Akha villages relied on opium harvest as a main cash crop. That changed when Thailand’s beloved Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great introduced the Royal Project around the late 1960`s: an initiative that encouraged farmers to shift from harvesting opium to practicing sustainable crops and best farming methods (Intercropping). With support from this program, the Akha began cultivating fruits, vegetables, and Arabica coffee suited to their high-altitude terrain and received premium prices from the local and China and Japan markets.

Today, those same hills that once grew opium are home to some of Thailand’s most celebrated coffees that are known for its complex, clean, and inspiring character profiles. Each harvest reflects a remarkable transformation: from hardship to hope, and from the mountain soil to cups enjoyed around the world.
